Position Summary

The Justice Institute of British Columbia, School of Public Safety, invites applications for a part-time Sessional Faculty position to teach online courses in emergency management and/or security management. These courses support the Diploma in Emergency and Security Management and the Bachelor of Emergency and Security Management Studies. We are seeking instructors with expertise in the application of technology in security and emergency management. The successful candidate will collaborate with program staff and instructional designers to review and update course materials and prepare the course in Blackboard (including assignment deadlines and discussion forums), and deliver engaging online instruction aligned with established learning outcomes. The instructor will foster an inclusive and supportive learning environment, encourage learner interaction, critical thinking, and reflective practice, and provide timely, constructive feedback and assessment of student work. This course will be offered during the Fall semester and delivered fully online.

The course will discuss cyber security, geospatial technology, warning systems, AI-assistance, trends and cost assessments of technology through a range of local and national case studies and articles. Students will be asked to participate in weekly discussion forums, demonstrating critical thinking, application of course concepts and making connections to their own lives. The course culminates in an interactive oral assessment where students apply their understanding of course concepts.

Qualifications & Requirements:

• Related post-secondary qualification, or a suitable combination of education/training and experience within area of expertise.
• Teaching or adult education credential, Provincial Instructor Diploma, or completion of suitable instructional skill/ techniques training.
• Experience working in emergency and or security management.
• Knowledge of Indigenous communities and educational approaches which are culturally sensitive to effective learning.
• Excellent interpersonal skills.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Experience teaching online using Blackboard or using other learning management systems.
