Position Summary
In support of JIBC’s certificates, diploma, and degree programs, the Centre for Liberal and Graduate Studies invites applications for a part-time sessional faculty position to facilitate the semester-based BUSN-4100 Labour Law in Canada course in the summer 2025 term commencing May 5, 2025 (online). While facilitation of the course may be remote the successful candidate must be a resident of British Columbia during their employment with JIBC.
BUSN-4100 Labour Law in Canada - Course Description
Students will learn about the history of labour relations in Canada, as well as the legal framework within which labour relations operate. Considerable time will be spent examining the constitutional, legislative and common law context of Canadian labour relations, as well as related legal issues such as: workers’ compensation, employment law, human rights law, privacy law and Canada’s related international legal obligations. Competing theoretical perspectives on labour relations will be examined, and all course materials will be illustrated with real life examples to prepare students to deal with simple and complex labour relations issues in the workplace.
Primary Responsibilities
As an instructor, your responsibilities include facilitation of your designated course(s), including (but not limited to) the following:
- Delivering your designated course(s) via the Blackboard Ultra Learning Management System as an asynchronous delivery.
- Working with program staff prior to delivery, including updating syllabus assignment deadlines in Blackboard, checking external reading/media links, setting up groups and discussion threads, etc.
- Delivering course content in keeping with the course outline and learning outcomes.
- Establishing an online classroom environment that is supportive to learning.
- Writing an announcement each week to let learners know about course activities and upcoming deadlines.
- Responding to learner emails and answering questions related to course content and assignments within 48 hours, ideally within 12-24 hours.
- Monitoring discussion boards and learner progress and addressing performance and participation problems throughout the semester, including the exam period.
- Facilitating learning by fostering interaction between learners and self, and learners with other learners in discussion forum and other course activities.
- Actively encouraging discussion, critical, and reflective thinking and helping learners make connections between theory and practice.
- Providing effective feedback on and marking/grading of assignments and maintaining Blackboard Grade Centre.
- Being available to connect with learners by phone or via online in Collaborate up to one hour per week (office hours and by appointment).
- Compliance with all relevant JIBC policies, procedures, and guidelines related to instruction as outlined in the JIBC’s Teaching Faculty Handbook.
Required Qualifications:
- Experience teaching online using Blackboard Ultra and Collaborate or using other learning management systems;
- Juris Doctor J.D. or Bachelor of Law LLB with subject expertise in Canadian labour law - constitutional, legislative and common law, legal issues such as: workers’ compensation, employment law, human rights law, privacy law and Canada’s related international legal obligations in Canadian Labour Law;
- Minimum of two years of documented teaching experience;
- Experience working in a justice & public safety related field is preferred;
- BC Instructors certificate or equivalent preferred;
- Effective written and oral communication skills;
- Ability to maintain collegial working relationships with students, staff, administration and other instructors;
- Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills with a proven ability to work under pressure while satisfying student requests and applying relevant program and institutional policies, procedures and guidelines;
- Demonstrated proficiency at the intermediate level in Blackboard, Microsoft Office applications, and web browser application.

Salary Range: |
Compensation for this postion will be dependant on student enrollment per semester. The salary range will be $4,205.46 to $6,930.84 based on student enrollment per course. |
