Librarian - Research Assistant

Campus Location: New Westminster

Position Summary


Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC) Library is conducting a research project focused on understanding and improving how international students develop library research skills. With the number of international students growing significantly in recent years, this project seeks to identify both the challenges and knowledge gaps these students face and to develop strategies for better support.

We are seeking a Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS) student to join our project as a Research Assistant. This is an excellent opportunity for a student seeking hands-on research experience in an academic setting. You’ll work closely with experienced librarians and gain valuable skills in qualitative research, data analysis, and scholarly communication.

Responsibilities include conducting literature reviews and background research as needed, collecting and organizing qualitative and quantitative data in Excel, and analyzing and summarizing research findings. Additional duties include creating visualizations (e.g., pie charts, bar graphs) to communicate data insights, and maintaining confidentiality and adhering to research ethics guidelines.

 

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in a Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS) or equivalent program.
  • Strong interest in academic librarianship, research instruction, and user experience.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with Excel, Google Sheets, and basic data visualization.
  • Self-motivated, organized, and able to work independently.
